Investigating Facilities
The map provides starting points for deeper investigations. Each facility type offers different investigative pathways:
Slaughterhouses & Processing Facilities
For meat processing facilities, use the facility information to conduct deeper research:
- Public Company Research: If the facility belongs to a publicly traded company (like Tyson, JBS, Cargill), research their 10-K forms filed with the SEC. These annual reports contain detailed information about:
- Board members and executives
- Financial performance and risks
- Legal proceedings and regulatory issues
- Business operations and subsidiaries
Access 10-K forms at SEC's EDGAR database
- Corporate Connections: Research parent companies, subsidiaries, and business relationships
Animal Testing Laboratories
For research facilities, additional investigation tools are available:
- ARLO Database: Click "View full reports on ARLO" in any lab's popup to access detailed facility histories on the ARLO website by Rise for Animals. ARLO provides:
- Historical inspection reports and violations
- Animal welfare incidents and deaths
- Facility licensing and compliance history
- Research protocols and animal usage data
- University Research: For academic institutions, research their animal care committees and research protocols
- Government Labs: Use FOIA requests to obtain more detailed information about government research facilities
Breeders, Dealers, & Exhibitors/Zoos
APHIS-licensed facilities can be investigated using their certificate numbers:
- APHIS Public Search Tool: Use the APHIS Animal Welfare Inspection Database to search by:
- Certificate Number: Found in each facility's popup information
- Business Name: Search by the facility name
- Location: Search by city, state, or ZIP code
- What You'll Find: The APHIS database provides:
- Current license status and expiration dates
- Inspection reports dating back several years
- Animal welfare violations and citations
- Types of animals held at the facility
- Business contact information
